Bold, Daring, and Fearless<\/strong> <\/h3>\n

Jessica Fierro found her passion for beer and brewing in Germany, where she and her husband, U.S. Army veteran Rich Fierro, were stationed. A German brewer offered to mentor Fierro and she was instantly committed to the craft: \u201cI was enthralled with the process,\u201d she said. \u201cI realize now how much work is involved, but I thought, \u2018My God, I can totally do this.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

From Apprentice to Prime Time<\/strong><\/h3>\n

In 2017, Fierro\u2019s go-to homebrew recipe hit the big time. She accepted an invitation to appear on \u201cBeerland,\u201d a reality TV series on Viceland. Her beer won the competition, and it was scaled up and brewed commercially. \u201cIt was that moment that gave me the confidence to open the doors to my own brewery,\u201d Jessica said.<\/p>\n

Diversity, It’s on Tap<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The Fierros started Atrevida Beer Company in 2018, in Colorado Springs, the first Latin-owned brewery in Colorado run by a female head brewer. (By the way, Spanish word \u201catrevida\u201d means a woman who is bold, daring, and fearless.)\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

From day one, they sought to create a gathering place that welcomes everyone<\/em> in their community. A large sign reading \u201cDiversity, It\u2019s on Tap\u201d greets visitors to the taproom. \u201cAnyone who comes in here should know that this is a safe space,\u201d Jessica said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Unthinkable Tragedy <\/strong><\/h3>\n

On November 19\u201320, 2022, a gunman opened fire at Club Q, an LGBTQ nightclub in Colorado Springs, Colorado, killing five people and wounding 25. The death toll likely would\u2019ve been much higher had the Fierros not been in the crowd. Using his army training, Rich Fierro and another patron were able to subdue the gunman and prevent further bloodshed. <\/p>\n

\u201cEveryone in there was having a great time, and somebody decided to change our lives forever,\u201d he said. \u201cThat\u2019s the ugly part about this. We have to go through this forever.\u201d <\/p>\n

Helping a Community Heal<\/strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n

Atrevida\u2019s founding commitment to inclusion took on even more significance in the wake of the shooting. \u201cWhen this event happened at ClubQ, the community already knew us as allies,\u201d Richard said. \u201cWe offered [our brewery] as a safe space before, and we continue to do that. We\u2019re open for everybody.\u201d<\/p>\n
